Starting a company, signing a big contract or chasing money you are owed — getting it right on paper saves far more than it costs.
Who you need
A commercial or corporate solicitor for contracts and company matters. A commercial litigation solicitor for disputes.
What to do first
- Put agreements in writing before work starts. Even a short signed letter is better than nothing.
- Unpaid invoice? Send a clear letter before action first. Most claims up to £10,000 in England & Wales go to the small claims track; in Scotland, simple procedure covers claims up to £5,000.
- Falling out with a shareholder or partner? Check what your articles of association or partnership agreement say first.
- Ask for a fixed fee or a capped estimate for clearly defined work.
Questions worth asking any lawyer
- What will this cost — fixed fee, hourly rate, or a share of any compensation?
- Who will actually do the work, and how often will I hear from you?
- Have you handled cases like mine, and what's a realistic outcome?
- Could I get this done for free through legal aid, insurance or a charity?
