Debt & Insolvency
Worried about debt, court papers or bailiffs? For personal debt, free help is the right place to start — you rarely need to pay anyone.
Who you need
For personal debt, a free debt charity. For business insolvency, or if you're being sued for a large sum, an insolvency solicitor or a licensed insolvency practitioner.
What to do first
- Don't ignore court papers. If you receive a claim form you usually have 14 days to respond.
- Free, regulated debt advice is available from StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice. Be wary of firms that charge fees upfront.
- Breathing Space in England & Wales can pause most creditor action for 60 days while you get debt advice.
- If your home is at risk, get advice straight away.
Questions worth asking any lawyer
- What will this cost — fixed fee, hourly rate, or a share of any compensation?
- Who will actually do the work, and how often will I hear from you?
- Have you handled cases like mine, and what's a realistic outcome?
- Could I get this done for free through legal aid, insurance or a charity?
This guide is general information, not legal advice, and it can't take account of your circumstances. The law differs in England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it changes. If something is urgent, speak to a solicitor — in an emergency, call 999.
